9 Cool Things To Do In La Reunion Island

Looking for cool things to do in La Reunion? For those that dream of a private paradise, you may have just found it in Reunion Island. Hidden away in the Indian Ocean lies a small island called Reunion. Unknown to many, Reunion Island is home to the French, although it’s more than 9000km away from Paris. Don’t ask me about it, I don’t understand it either…

With unmatched views, magical landscapes, and picturesque trails, beaches, and shorelines, this unique paradise will have you feeling like you’re playing a role in the movie ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio!
Packed with an abundance of beauty and nature, Reunion is a backpacker’s dream. Hike to your heart’s content lay beachside to soothe the soul, or sit oceanside for a candlelit dinner. No matter what you do here on this island, you’ll be one lucky traveller who gets to experience it.

Beaches & Lagoons

Because it’s an island in the Indian Ocean, La Reunion Island is the host of numerous world-class beaches that you only see in your dreams. Blocked from the waves of the ocean, home of coral reefs, and packed with white sand, a beach day or two will need to be on your list of cool things to do in La Reunion.

Marine Life

While you seek out the best beaches, be sure to book your whale watching tour while you’re at it. With a number of organizations that offer these tours, you won’t have too much trouble. Nonetheless, due to the abundance of marine life here in Reunion, it’s a sight to see in the sea and a must for animal and water lovers alike.

Natural Waterfalls

Have I mentioned how beautiful nature is here in Reunion yet? Here in Reunion, water activities are certainly not in a shortage. From beaches and lagoons to Marine tours and waterfalls, you’ll be bathing in the beauty of reunions abundance of water for the duration of your stay. To recommend one of the more scenic waterfalls to check out, note “Bassin Des Aigrettes”. It’s jaw-dropping, to say the least.

A 600,000 Litre Aquarium

You read that right. A popular tourist destination and a must-do in my books are visiting the 600,000-litre aquarium in Port De Saint-Gilles. Packed with more than 500 members of marine life, the Reunion aquarium is simply gorgeous. If you have kids, this will likely be their favourite part!

Hiking a Volcano

Again, yes, you read that right. Reunion Island is home to numerous volcanoes, one being Piton De Fournaise. So when you’re packing for a trip of a lifetime, be sure to pack your hiking shoes! Important note: Don’t make the mistake that I did – dress appropriately. Because it’s a volcano, temperatures shift drastically the higher your go.
Another hiking destination to check out is Le Maido, located on the island’s north end. Stunning is an understatement. If this isn’t enough, seek out Reunion’s highest peak-Piton Des Neiges. With 360 degrees, panoramic views, you’ll be glad you made the trek.

If Hiking Isn’t Enough, Canyon

Canyoning is a popular tourist activity in Reunion, though it’s quite the challenge. However, if you’re an adventurer and extremist, this activity might just be for you! With natural landscaping throughout these mind-bending canyons, you’ll be sure to be in awe while you run, trek, jump, and swim throughout the duration of the climb. Don’t worry, though, the tour guides are professional and experienced so that you can enjoy the most of what these canyons have to offer.

Gander Through The Gardens

One thing La Reunion Island is known for is its beautifully scented, perfume-like gardens. The fragrances that get released in these gardens are incredible, and with the abundance of plant life, your smell will most certainly be on high alert.

Cheers to Rum

Reunions tradition in alcohol is one you’ll most certainly want to learn about. At Saint-Pierre distillery and museum, you’ll be able to do just that. Of course, you’ll be able to lather your tastebuds with the aromas of the island’s traditional alcoholic drinks, as well. So, take a tour, try all the varieties of rum you can handle, and end the tour on a
high, literally.

Fly Sky High

If the beauty of the land and the awe of the ocean isn’t enough for you, it’s time to take your adventure to new heights. While in reunion, take a tour in a helicopter to see truly what Reunion is all about. As many agree, there are few places in the world that offer the beauty and awe-inspiring nature that Reunion island does, especially when seeing it all from a birds-eye view. All aboard!
