Metropolis Rooftop Garden Restaurant Athens
Trying to impress a date while on your romantic Grecian getaway? Maybe you’re trying to discover Athens’ finest dining experience? Or maybe you’re looking for a celiac-friendly restaurant in Athens…Then the rooftop restaurant of the Electra is the place for you. A creative blend of meat and fish is the name of the game for this haute cuisine restaurant. With a somewhat limited menu that serves up simple dishes, the menu is seasonal and constantly changing. This is largely because it emphasizes locally sourced Greek ingredients. But why am I talking about the food when really the main reason you come here is the view? And what a view. I can’t describe it but if you’re able to get a table facing the Acropolis then you’ll be lucky enough to bear witness to the Cradle of Civilisation in all its resplendent glory. Can you put a price on that? Well apparently you can, and it’s something to the tune of 20 euros for a starter and almost double for a main. A lot, but surely the right price for a perfect date night?
The Food
The celiac-friendly menu was not designed with vegetarians in mind. But as a celiac, I faired relatively well with a decent number of gluten-free options. I opted for the tuna tartar largely out of curiosity in regards to the bloody Mary dressing. The portion was small as anticipated but each morsel was well flavoured. The tuna was certainly fresh and still rung of the sea and paired well with the crunch of the quinoa. The dressing, as intriguing as it sounded amounted to something akin to a spicy vodka sauce but that’s not to say it wasn’t tasty. I’d happily eat it again.
My love for risotto is well established at this point and given I had already had fish to start I chose the vegetarian asparagus risotto as my main. Its warmth was a considered combatant to the breezy spring night and the richness of the cheese and yogurt made the little dish deceptively filling. Filling or not, I felt I had room for dessert and opted for the zingy and refreshing lemon custard which was an excellent palate cleanser. I still have questions in regards to the sweet chilli sauce… it personally didn’t do anything for me, at least not anything I wanted to add.
Verdict
You can’t fault the service or the magic of the atmosphere. Watching the sunset over the city was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience to remember, nevertheless, it’ll be one my wallet remembers too. While everything was tasty, I was underwhelmed at the price point and one can’t help but leave feeling they’re paying for the view and not the food. Recommendable to the star-crossed lover but less so for the street-savvy foodie.
Nevertheless, a fairly celiac-friendly restaurant in Athens for those curious!
