Glyfada, Greece: Things You Need to Know

Despite its reputation as a paradise for tycoons, politicians, and rich thrill-seekers, Glyfada is more than just a Greek Marbella. While it has luxury boutiques, snazzy bars, and private beaches aplenty, there’s also some beautiful hidden joys to explore. Today we take a look at the heart of Glyfada, and why it should be on every traveler’s bucket list. It’s time to explore the Athenian Riviera!

Beachy Suburbs

Glyfada lies just 16km from the Acropolis. A haven of leafy streets and beachy suburban vibes that deserve the comparison to Beverly Hills. Yet glam and grit manage to coincide in this beautiful corner of the world, too.

If you want to shop ‘til you drop on the beach holiday of a lifetime, look no further. Metaxa street is a long, open-air mall packed with fast food and luxury boutiques. If you’re less into shopping and more into exploration, you can experience the cosmopolitan village vibe of the surrounding neighborhoods. Kyprou, for example, runs parallel to Metaxa, and has its own unique vibrancy, glamor, and energy that’s perfect for the exploring world nomad. From edgy boutiques and funky beauty bars to French delis (yes, French) and intriguing concept stores, you’ll find everything here. It’s the perfect way to celebrate Greek designers and find the perfect high-end gift with a difference.

The Many Tastes of Glyfada

If you’ve been here before. However, don’t expect to find the same stores, cafes, or trattorias. Glyfada is a place with an ever-changing face, but there’s one certainty- the hip foodie triangle that centers on Kyprou and Metaxa will always bring you something delightful to enjoy, redolent in fresh tastes and beach vibes.

Carnivores should head to Vari, 5km down the coast, for a celebration of charcoal and meat. Or enjoy the inland freshwater lake at Vouliagmeni, fed by a spring from Mount Hymettus. There’s a lovely spa here, or you can just drink in the local beauty spot in all its glory.

Explore the Beaches (and the Neighbourhood)

Glyfada is known for its private beaches, but there’s plenty of great public beaches, too, dotted with cafes and marinas. The third of the beaches is known as the secret spot for clear water and better sand- plus the Asteras Beach Resort, known for its adults-only seafront pool and beach bar, is right there. Astir beach has an entry fee, but it’s the best sand beach to be found in the area of Athens, so it can be worth it. Or head to Faliron and explore Greece’s most fashionable marina. There’s two fascinating museums here, castle-like Benaki and the floating Georgios Averof cruiser. Don’t forget to add the Stavros Niarchos Foundation cultural center to the list, too.

At night, Glyfada is best known as a nightlife hub, but it does have some family-friendly spots too. Whether it’s exploring the Archelon Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, or having fun bowling and exploring the arcades, there’s enough to keep smaller family members entertained. The Byzantine-inspired church, Panagia Faneromeni, is always worth taking in. Built only in 2005, it can easily trick the eye as a permanent part of the local skyline, and many are surprised to learn how new it is.

Plus, there’s the laiki, or street market, that cannot be missed. Occupying entire blocks of Lazaraki Street, people come from all over to experience this phenomenal market. From dazzling fresh food bargains (think Kalamata olives and bunches of fresh herbs for a steal) to breezy kaftans, there’s something to delight any heart. Expect little ones to be offered free sweets, and sample anything before you buy it. It’s vibrant, decadent, and one-of-a-kind. Beat the heat (and the crowds) and head through early, or pop past after 1 pm, when the best discounts surface.

Getting Around Glyfada

While all the usual suspects- rentals, taxis, and so on- are present for the area, there’s no better way to drink in the sights and sounds than through the local tram network. Glyfada’s trams are cheap and surprisingly efficient, and you’re sure to reach anywhere your heart pleases with them easily. With Athens just a few steps away, there’s plenty of time to relax and explore to your heart’s content.

Nestled on the south coast of Attica, Glyfada is a vibrant and sparkling jewel. Come here for trendy boutiques, delicious eateries, and a beach vibe that’s surprisingly similar to upscale areas of L.A and Miami Beach. Glyfada is a place to indulge in fun and sun, and let the cares of the world melt away moment by moment. Many people love to make Glyfada their home, popping into Athens as they please but not confined by her grungier aspects or traffic. Whether it’s sun and sea, or simply a dazzling splash of luxury you’re looking for, Glyfada is sure to deliver on every level.
